Project Archive: Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato Recreation
Status: Completed & Delivered
A definitive example of the Goldsmith & Young standard, this DB4 GT Zagato Recreation was a landmark project for our workshop. Built upon an original DB4 donor chassis, this vehicle represented a rare collaboration between our engineering team and the client, who specified the final finish and performance characteristics to create a truly bespoke masterpiece.
The Build Legacy
This recreation left nothing to chance. Every component was meticulously restored, rebuilt, or fabricated to the highest possible standard within our Mere facility. From the initial chassis preparation to the final dynamometer tuning, the project stands as a testament to our forty years of marque expertise.
Bodywork & the “Goldsmith Standard”
The journey began with a complete strip-down to the bare metal shell. Once the Zagato-style body was mounted, every component was dry-fitted to ensure perfect panel gaps before the painting process commenced.
-
Preparation: The bodyshell was acid-treated, oven-dried, and etch-primed to ensure a lifetime of preservation.
-
The Paint Process: We utilised high-specification 2-Pack paints, employing our signature double-block hand-flattening process with high-build primers to achieve ultimate surface flatness.
-
The Finish: Full detailing was applied to all panel edges and shut lines. The final colour was sealed under several coats of high-quality lacquer, then hand-flatted and polished to a mirror finish.
Engine & Drivetrain
-
Power Unit: The 6-cylinder engine was fully stripped and rebuilt to a 4.2-litre specification, utilising new liners and high-performance pistons.
-
Cylinder Head: A twin-plug head was converted to modern unleaded specifications.
-
Testing: To ensure peak performance, the engine was run and tuned on our in-house Dynamometer prior to installation.
-
Transmission: A 4-speed manual gearbox was rebuilt to original specifications and fitted with an overdrive for touring capability.
-
Ancillaries: The carburettors and air box were fully overhauled, and the car was modernised with a high-output alternator and high-speed starter motor.
Suspension, Steering & Braking
-
Chassis Components: The entire suspension system was overhauled. All parts were sand-blasted or bead-blasted before being refinished in primer and 2K black enamel.
-
Handling Upgrades: The rear shock absorbers were modified to upright dampers, and all bushings were renewed throughout.
-
Braking & Steering: The steering rack was fully overhauled with new mountings. The braking system was stripped and rebuilt with new calipers and Kunifer pipework with brass fittings.
Interior & Final Electrics
-
Bespoke Trim: The cabin was finished in the finest quality leather and wool carpets, tailored to the owner’s specific palette.
-
Instrumentation: The dashboard was stripped and restored to original factory specifications.
-
Glazing: A new front windscreen and windows were fitted throughout with new finishers.
-
Wiring: A completely new wiring harness was installed, alongside high-level soundproofing to ensure a refined road-going experience.
